Safety Policy

Objective

The policy is established to ensure high standard of workplace safety & health to all staff, students, research partners, visitors, and contractors (stakeholders) in Department of Building.

Commitment to Safety Compliance:

The Department of Building is committed to function and operate its workshop/laboratory activities according to the University and Department Standard Operating Procedures and Guidelines, and ensure safety compliance to all applicable legal requirements.

Role & Responsibilities:

Department Safety & Health Committee (DHSC)

  • Under the leadership of Head of Department (HOD), DSHC will assist in establishing, reviewing and implementing the Department Safety and Health Systems (DSHMS). This would include evaluating risk assessments, carrying out regular inspections, audits, identifying legal and university/faculty requirements and recommending improvements to the safety & health programme.

Principal Investigators (PI) and Academic Supervisor

  • Implement, maintain and continually improve his or her lab based Safety & Health Management system in a documented manner in accordance with the applicable legislative and NUS requirements.
  • Ensure that risk assessments are conducted and procedures are established for all laboratory activities.

Staff and Students

  • Comply with all S & H rules and regulations of the laboratory, department and NUS.
  • Attend the relevant training courses organized by the department and OSHE with certification.
  • Reporting to their PIs or supervisors on hazards, near misses, incidents or accidents in the workplace, classroom, laboratory or on campus.

Contractors

  • To familiarize themselves with the organization WSH management system and hazards involved in the work that they are carrying out.
  • To take prompt corrective action to remove any unsafe work condition and ensure that there is good housekeeping during and after the work is carried out.
  • Comply with all S & H rules and regulations of the laboratory, department and NUS.

Visitors

  • Comply with all S & H rules and regulations of the laboratory, department and NUS.
