7th International Building Physics Conference (IBPC 2018): Outstanding Paper Award

The Department congratulates Professor Lam Khee Poh, along with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) PhD candidates Zhiang Zhang and Chenlu Zhang, for receiving an Outstanding Paper Award at the 7th International Building Physics Conference (IBPC) for their paper entitled “A Deep Reinforcement Learning Method for Model-based Optimal Control of HVAC Systems.” Their research paper was one of only six papers to receive an award out of over 200 peer-reviewed accepted papers at the conference. The event took place on September 23-26, 2018 in Syracuse, New York.

42nd Australasian Universities Building Education Association (AUBEA) 2018: Best Paper (Technology) Award

The Department congratulates Associate Professor Goh Yang Miang, Lim Zheng Yi, Hana Samad and Seah Yi Ling Eveline (Project and Facilites Management fourth year student), for winning the 42nd Australasian Universities Building Education Association (AUBEA) 2018 Best Paper (Technology) award. The conference paper co-authored by the team describes SafeSim Hazards, a simulation game which provides a virtual site for teaching workplace safety and health.

$48,000 donation to the Lighthouse Club (Singapore) Bursary

On 24 September 2018, the Lighthouse Club (Singapore) made a $48,000 top-up donation to top-up the Lighthouse Bursary, which was established in 2009 to provide assistance to students who face financial difficulties in pursuing their studies in the University.

Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Conference 2018: Voice of the Millennial Workforce Symposium

Jasmine Tan, a Project and Facilities Management graduate, was recently invited to share her opinions and ideas regarding workplace health during the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Conference 2018 – Voice of the Millennial Workforce Symposium. The symposium, with an international audience of 400 people, provides a platform for youth advocates to share insights and solutions to transform workplaces to achieve Vision Zero. Jasmine shared ways to manage challenges posed by an ageing population and how one’s wellbeing could adversely affect work performance. Lastly, Jasmine discussed how students should take care of their health to contribute back to the economy.

World’s First International Conference on Construction 3D Printing (iC3dP) @ NUS on 5 & 6 July 2018

To celebrate the Inauguration of C3dP, the School of Design and Environment (SDE), NUS Centre for Additive Manufacturing (AM.NUS), and Singapore National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) are co-organising the World’s First International Conference on Construction 3D Printing (iC3dP) “Genesis of Future Construction”. The conference details are listed below:

  • Day 1: 5 July 2018 (10:30 AM – 6:00 PM) / Day 2: 6 July 2018 (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
  • Location: National University of Singapore, Singapore (Real-time streaming is available for registered attendants)
  • Charge: Free admission
  • Registration number: max. 150 for physical attendants (first come first served basis) / unrestricted for online attendants

Research meeting with Ambassador TENG Theng Dar on the development of Construction 3D Printing in Oman

IHL Productivity Challenge 2017

The Department congratulates Irwin Hafiz B Hairy, Tan Kai Yi, Goh Yan Jie, Fung Chun Chang and Phan Do Phuong Uyen, who won the 2nd Runner up at the “IHL Productivity Challenge 2017”, organised by Building & Construction Authority. The project-based competition required participants to propose buildable systems and construction methods which at the very minimum satisfied the Buildable Design and Constructability scores that were set out.

2017 Hyundai E&C Technology Grand Award

The Department congratulates Ashan Senel Asmone (PhD student) and Lau Shing Hou (Final year, PFM) who won the silver award at the “2017 Hyundai E&C Technology Grand Award”. The title of their proposal is “Designing in Reality: Automated Maintainability Assessment for Building Projects using BIM”. This project was guided by Ashan’s supervisor; Professor Michael Chew.

On 31 August 2017, Building and Estate Management Alumni (BEMA) made a $100,000 donation to top-up the BEMA Bursary, which was set up in 2013 to provide relief for undergraduates in need from Department of Building and Department of Real Estate.

International Executive Program in Project Management 2017 (14th Batch) organized jointly by NUS and the University of Moratuwa

The Centre for Project Management and Construction Law, Department of Building, National University of Singapore jointly hosted the above program with the Centre for Excellence in Project Management, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka between 27th June and 7th July 2017. 20 senior‐level participants representing different organisations from both Private and Public attended the program which was conducted in Singapore.

Building and Construction Authority Research Grant Award: Professor Wong Nyuk Hien

The Department congratulates Professor Wong Nyuk Hien, who received a research grant award from Building and Construction Authority, for his research project entitled, ‘Study on Acceptable Reflectance Level of Building Facade Materials in Singapore’.

The project aims to improve the visual performance of building façade in Singapore, with the following three main objectives:

  1. To evaluate the acceptable daylight reflectance of building façade to achieve visual comfort in the surrounding environment in Singapore
  2. To identify critical factors that cause glare problem and potential Urban Heat Island (UHI) problem by parametric 3D modelling
  3. To develop methodology and guidelines for building designers to evaluate and improve the visual performance of building façade
