TTSH wins energy efficiency award

Reports by Janice Wong

THE most talked about hospital in Singapore is again in the news, but for a happier reason.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has bagged the third prize in the Energy Efficient Building Awards.

This award by the Building and Construction Authority recognises building owners, architects and engineers. Building are judged on criteria such as the efficiency of lighting systems, use of ventilation to cool a structure and building-automation systems.

An initiative by TTSH's in-house engineers shaved about $34,000, or about 10 per cent, off the hospital's electricity bills.

One of the winning features are the sensors at its 71 restrooms which automatically switch off the lights when they do not detect movement.

This installation saved up to 60 percent of power.

Mr Toh Eng Cheong, 55, senior engineer of TTSH, coordinates the 50 engineering staff involved in the project.

He said: "Our utility charges increased in 1999 when we moved into this new building. We wanted to improve efficiency. It took us a year of monitoring operations to establish what to change.

"The biggest challenge was to make sure the quality of healthcare was not compromised. For example, we introduced timer controls for ventilations only for carparks and not in wards."

In fact, the wards have cranked up their ventilation since the Sars outbreak, Mr Toh said.

The architectural firm, CPG Consultants, was also commended for TTSH's structural design.

The top award here went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Tanglin with Capital Tower taking the second place.
