Designing to save energy

PWD Consultants, the architect of Revenue House, has a ""design philosophy'' that is environment-friendly and energy-saving.

Mr Khor Poh Hwa, PWD Corporation's president and chief executive officer, said that as new buildings come up, their construction and operation place an increasing cost on the environment.

And now, with Revenue House winning the Most Energy-Efficient Building in Asean award, PWD Consultants has incorporated similar features into other intelligent buildings it is designing, such as the new Ministry of Education building on North Buona Vista Road.

Assoc Prof Lee Siew Eang of NUS, who is a member of the centre which organised the contest, said the award was intended to be a ""platform to promote energy efficiency and replicate energy-efficient design practices'' in the region.

Mr Khor said older buildings can be retrofitted, resulting in savings for them. ""With costs going up, it is to the advantage of the buildings' owners.''
